Metaphorically speaking, ‘green flag’ is the opposite of ‘red flag’. As for the colors, green could mean raw, fresh, flourishing, etc., while red could signify love, passion, strong emotions and whatnot. “Green flag”, on the other hand, is some sort of a signal for consideration given the good attributes one possesses. Contrariwise, “red flag” is for cautionary signs… Contrasting, as well as ironic. What if it’s head to head? What if it’s mixed together? Much like when the traffic lights’ red and green are simultaneously on, it’ll be confusing. Stop or go? When the yellow light gets burnt out, the opportunity to either slow down or proceed with caution is busted as well. Two options left… Chaos looms. It’s a glaring illumination of Philippine colors today. The ‘Marcos Red’ and the ‘Duterte Green’. Divided as the Philippines is, their respective supporters bleed these colors quite glaringly. It’s blinding. The sun and stars in our national flag might have lost its glimmer. Darkened by this clash of political colors, we’re losing our true identity. The Filipino brown. Quite ironic, the combination of red and green when mixed together, makes it brown. Now, we’re more like “mixed brown”, a mixed breed of diluted Pinoy pride and a sunburnt Filipino trait. We’re conceitedly proud for self-absorbed reasons and our warmth has been irregularly tanned. Boasting of qualities substandard to the other. It’s like two uncultured individuals arguing who’s more knowledgeable. Similarly, two cold-hearted people in a dispute as to who’s warm-hearted between them. Trying to prove who’s more Filipino… Whereas for the remaining browns, they’re feeling blue. Sadly, our national flag’s blue is fading. The peace, truth and justice it represents have become incompatible: achieving peace with a lie, truth told with injustice, attaining justice while sacrificing peace, and so on… Green is taking over that calm blue while red is trying to maintain its position not to be in a state of war. Its patriotism and valor however is not without questionable motives. The sun’s ray represents the eight provinces with significant roles in the Philippine Revolution and the three stars constitute Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, but now, the Philippines seems to be divided by just the north and the south. The triangle delineates the love triangle between them and those they’re respectively trying to persuade and win over with their truth.

From the green camp, their self-patronizing truth on constitutional law and moral principles is also self-believed to be the epitome of how it should be “partisanly” executed. Pun intended as much as we know how that pans out, summary executions (extrajudicial killings) are justified. An extremist executioner yet ironically with a victim mentality now. Now, due process is demanded for their then non-compliance with it… They find blasphemy against God and the Pope amusing but agitated and factionally protective of the self-proclaimed “appointed son of God” and the “owner of the universe” who is likewise facing criminal charges. Cursing became a norm. Lust gets an arousing approval. Polygamy likewise multiplies admiration. Patriotism is pronounced in Chinese ~ àiguó zhūyi. Trolling is encouraged. Lying/hypocrisy is a straightforward political strategy with dramatic flair (with fictitious names and shady characters even). Bullying is humanized yet it immortalizes their brand of swagger. Authoritarianism and condescension deliver control. Pride is lauded with pride. Fanaticism fans the blaze of idolatry while adulation strokes ‘hero worship’. Atty. Salvador Panelo himself, one who bleeds green as well, described them as easily swayed… and that’s just one thing that’s being exploited. Ego takes advantage of fanatical believers’ gullibility. And these green fans’ hypothesis is blind to the truth while audaciously claiming that “it’s the best/safest time in Philippine history” during a time when, unfortunately, fear is disguised as fortitude. A political gambit and machination they excel in and where their fans fall for. These and more, yet denial and story deviation are most likely. Moreover, they get belligerently defensive and spitefully offensive. How they’ll react to this despite all the evidence would be a downright case in point.

Whereas from the red corner, instigating further conflict, they’re provoking the greens with the above-mentioned contradictory narratives. It’s not as if they’re not guilty of any of those but probably subtly better or failing at it. However, PBBM is accused as a weak leader while trying too much to be the opposite of Duterte’s iron-fisted way of ruling. His opposing approach might as well be what “OA” stands for as their administration is inordinately precautious compared to his predecessor. It lacks balance while trying to balance the sentiments of a divided people including the imbalance within his political party and his cabinet. Speaking of which, it’s an apparent muffled defense mechanism in addressing the truth behind their family’s “skeleton-in-the-closet or dirty linen” from the past which they’ve always been adamant about. Their ill-gotten wealth is yet the elephant in the room, a haunting reminder of corruption as much as it’s still prompting influence and control. Not as controlling as his father’s martial law though, he can’t seem to admit their conscious participation or awareness in that dark event in history. The same grim era from the previous administration which he is trying to sort out and rectify albeit rather lacking. Apparently, he’s aiming to create his own and a better legacy while at the same time placing their family name in check and relevant still. He needs to be more firm and circumvent the misgiving and trepidation from the opposition and that of his political opponent’s vengeful nature. Other than of course dealing with his big sister’s “red flag” green association if it’s not part of a bigger political scheme… As it appears, PBBM is maintaining his cool despite these obstacles to his economic and social transformation through his brand of governance and leadership campaign, ‘Bagong Pilipinas’.

Amidst these old ways amongst traditional politicians and due to our contentious conservatism in general, could it really prosper, a “new Philippines”? Bagong Pilipinas. BP. As Both Parties “de-voted-ly” bleed their respective color, it seems though that it’s rather shooting up BP, Blood Pressure. And all because of the “hyper tension” between “BP”, Berde at Pula (Green and Red). A battle of mind-conditioning and manipulation, propagandas abound. And by propaganda, it’s been “puro pa-ganda and p’ro pa-pogi” between these clashing colors while expressing and exposing the ugly side of each other. That’s not beautiful at all. It instigates further annoyance even among browns and others. As if they don’t know that, however, there’s a need to point out what needs to be improved on. At the expense of fundamental truth and for a self-serving agenda, it has become some sort of leverage for political positioning and posturing amongst government officials spread out across the three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. For the same disreputable reason, they’re questionably true-blue Filipinos. But what does it really take to be a Filipino? Is it by birthright, by blood, by lineage, by ancestry, by deed, by adaptation to cultural, traditional, emotional, mental, spiritual ties? Too many factors. And by factors, we mean constituents and our interdependence. Likewise an inclusion to one, a combination or constitution of these elements as a correlation with each and every constituent and fellow Filipino. The point is, we’re not supposed to be fighting. We’re in a civil war. However, to each his own includes differences in every sense of the word. Nevertheless, nonsense and senselessness play a balancing role for all the realization to make sensible changes. Comprehensible enough, hopefully, for the greenhorns and those caught red-handed, unthinking, and on either side to also understand. They are, quite frankly and at all levels, overly annoying (OA) but they do serve a purpose like the forbidden fruit. It’s one way to go about change…

In bringing about change, couldn’t these “pro-Philippines, pro-Filipino” politicians be proactive as far as “in aid of legislation and public administration” instead of “in aid of their ulterior motives? Couldn’t these colors mix well to produce the kind of brown Filipinos are? The brown with a blue disposition and bleeds patriotism and valor. Not green that hates red and vice versa. Until they truly unite, they’re not Filipino-brown enough. They’re “green Filipinos” waving a different flag. Others are “red Filipinos” flagged as half Pinoy under “green magic”, leaning more on envy of which that dark spell represents. As far as flagging is concerned, the greens have ‘red flag’ integrants as much as the reds have ‘green flag’ components and also work the other way around. We just hope that they get to work around together and start acting like true-blue Filipinos or “ brown Filipinos”. And we can all raise our “red and blue, three stars and the sun” with pride. As brown as any of us, we’re not as blinded as these overzealous greens and reds to understand that that is possible. As to being brown, let us imbibe what brown stands for. Be Real and OWN it. Remember, with the right mixture of red and green, it becomes brown. As for “politically trying” resulting in your failed “Uniteam”, it was more about “fix” than “mix”. Now, you’ve mixed yourselves into the political fray and have become political fixtures of Philippine disintegration. The glaring and blinding red vs green clash, simultaneously “lightning and thundering”, is becoming a “traffic fixture”. It’s trafficking dissension. “Heavy traffic” that is, it’s slowing down the Philippines. For this “heavy traffic”-causing obstacles, stop (red) and think, then go (green) cooperatively together. “Drive Defensively and Safe” (DDS) and “Become Better Maneuverers” (BBM)… Because if this “heavy traffic” goes on, you’ll also become permanent fixtures of Philippine history’s civil unrest… not the legacy you want to leave, I believe. Unite for real and try the right mixture this time. Be on it! BROWN it with your right hand on chest and the Philippine flag
honorably raised up.
